In recent times it has become more popular to complain about what we lack, than to be thankful for all that we enjoy.
Perhaps it is time for us to return to what we were all taught as children, “Be thankful for what you have.”
President Washington’s Proclamation, 1789(an excerpt):
“Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor; and whereas both houses of Congress have by their joint committee requested me ‘to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially be affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness”.
For all our troubles we live in amazing times. The standard of living has never been higher, the opportunities for the future have never been brighter, the amount of free time & methods to enjoy it abound today, and yet the talk is only about the struggles.
It is time to recall another thing most of us were taught in youth, “Focus on the solution and not the problem.” Yes, we all know those suffering in this time of economic challenge, but we also know that living within our means (that is spending less than you make) is all that is needed to overcome that challenge. I heard long ago that “the only true security is your willingness & ability to perform.”
So, it is time to tighten our belts (opportunity to eliminate weight – heart – health troubles), stop overspending (eliminate debt & start saving for emergencies), quit entertaining ourselves into ignoring problems (education instead of entertainment), thank God for what we have and look to the future with renewed vigor and hope!
