James Madison Was Right!

Is there no virtue among us? If there be not, we are in a wretched situation. No theoretical checks–no form of government can render us secure. To suppose that any form of government will secure liberty or happiness without any virtue in the people, is a chimerical idea. If there be sufficient virtue and intelligence in the community, it will be exercised in the selection of these men. So that we do not depend on their virtue, or put confidence in our rulers, but in the people who are to choose them. – James Madison

This country was founded upon principles, values and morals not upon “looking out for number 1”, “getting mine NOW!” or “getting over on him before he gets over on me.” It was founded upon the idea that WE the people care about each other and care about what happens to our children, our families and our country BEFORE we care about what we get from every word we spoke.

When did that change?

When did we forget about those morals that our forefathers fought and died for against a tyranny?

Our Constitution, our very form of government was designed to work on “public virtue” not personal gain. The pursuit of happiness was about making us all better and enjoying the freedom that was bought with the blood of so many.

Can we get back there? Can we return to a time of virtue and morals and caring through the increase of government? Will we be better off as a people if our very breath has to be derived from a government document? I think not.

I think that our best chance of returning to the very foundation of our country lies in each of us turning our eyes off of ourselves and up towards the One that gave us life and gave us this wonderful country.

Without Him and a little personal sacrifice we are truly doomed.

I think at least part of it depends on perspective. I don’t think anyone can truly report on which faction is greater in action, those that do for others in the majority of their time versus those that do only for themselves at all times. How would you measure that? I prefer to focus on those that for the majority of their time, do for others. I see it daily because if it weren’t for the people in my “village” my son and I would not be the people we are today, pretty decent and always striving to be better, like those around us.

You are so right. The vast majority of the people around me genuinely care about others. My puzzlement lies in overwhelming selfishness and blatant favoritism shown by so many who wield political power today.

Perhaps it is antiquated to think of those in the government as “public servants” but I do. Overall, the American people are the most generous in the world. Let’s get that same spirit (in action, not just in words) back in Washington without allowing politicians to use that to cover things being done in the back room that hurt the very people they were elected to represent.

I guess my biggest challenge with this is not even with the lousy blood-sucking politicians, its with the average American citizens that don’t look at anything except what is best for them right at that moment regardless of how it affects others and how it will affect them long-term.
